Confirmation

Confirmation Preparation

“Remember, then, that you received a spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear. Keep safe what you received. God the Father sealed you, Christ the Lord strengthened you and sent the Spirit into your hearts as the pledge of what is to come.”— St. Ambrose

The sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist in Spring of 2019. The date will be determined in Fall, 2018.

About our program

The St John confirmation team would like to invite your teenager to participate in the preparation program for the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. John. The Sacrament of Confirmation is an opportunity to celebrate what God is doing in your life and be welcomed by the greater Church community, as you deepen your understanding of yourself and your faith. Confirmation is also a wonderful occasion to build strong relationships with other Catholic youth and make participation in church more enjoyable through service and community life. Candidates for Confirmation must be at least sixteen years of age by May 31, 2019, or in the 11th grade.  Those who are younger who believe they are ready may request an exeption; these are granted by the Archbishop.

Who is eligible to receive Confirmation?

In our archdiocese, the sacrament of Confirmation is available to young adults age 16 and above who are baptized, participating Catholics and who have completed a parish preparation program and discernment process. Youth who do not meet the age requirement but are engaged and active in our parish community may be able to receive special permission to receive the sacrament. Contact us for details as soon as possible if this is something you want to pursue.

Choosing a Sponsor

A sponsor must be a confirmed, practicing Catholic who is at least 18 years of age. You may not choose one of your parents. Godparents, if available, are considered ideal sponsors. You are encouraged to choose someone who lives close enough to you that you can meet regularly. Please choose someone with whom you feel you can be open and honest when speaking about your faith. A sponsor’s role is to represent the support and prayers of the entire Church. Please choose prayerfully. It is preferred that you have a sponsor chosen before starting the preparation process, but please make sure at the latest you have one by the end of January.
